Territory teams up with BBC Top Gear

When Territory was approached to create motion graphics for BBC Top Gear’s King of the Hammers & Dubai shows, we jumped at the chance to team up with our favourite petrolheads.
For these two action packed episodes. we created 3D maps showing a gritty desert landscape track and a city circuit that's pure gold.

The Dubai map

Our five gold maps illustrated the route from Dubai to Oman, with Harris behind the wheel of the fantastic new Bugatti Chiron. Cut between the progression of the race, the maps visualise the terrain and each time showcase Matt Le Blanc’s different modes of transport from boat and jet to bike.

“Using Cinema 4D and the plugin DEM Earth, we drew on open sources satellite data from companies such as Bing and Google, downloading elevation sets and open street map data to accurately chart the mountainous terrain and highways of our opulent gold landscape.”  – designer Gordon Spurs
The King of the Hammers map

Our King of the Hammers map charted the progress of Chris Harris’ and Sabine Schmitz’s Ultra 4 vehicles over the notoriously difficult and rocky off-road track in the California desert as they go head to head for the title of fastest driver. Or rather, second-fastest, after The Stig, of course.

"On King of the Hammers the brief was to create something that brings back the gritty, dusty atmosphere of the event. We used some basic elevation data and then sculpted the terrain in Zbrush. We also created smoke simulations and various atmospheric passes to contribute to the mood.” — creative lead Peter Eszenyi
The Top Gear team were great to work with - director Jon Richards came to Territory for our skills and expertise and was 100% satisfied with the resulting maps. Tweeting on the night: “Massive Thanks to @territorystudio and @davidsheldonhic for their gold top gear maps. Quality work."
