The Opus is a  series of computer-generated pictures explores and the emergence of patterns in higher levels of complexity, patterns which are entirely due to, but not directly derivable from the lower level of complexity. It illustrates the concept that different levels of complexity have their own descriptors.
If the images are viewed closely, the terms “characters” “font” “colour” “clusters” are relevant to the description of the image.

Viewed from further back the concepts of “eyes” “ear” “face” become relevant and combine in the recognition of the subject.

The characters’ disposition and their colour are entirely responsible for the rendering of the image. But they are not the image, the image is something that only emerges when looking at the next level. It is not additional to the arrangement and colouring of the characters – it is just a concept that only becomes relevant when looking at a group of characters. The image is the property of the population of characters, not of the characters.

Mendel has been rendered from the sequence of the pea Le gene. A mutation in this gene causes dwarfism of the plant. The inheritance of this characteristic and a few others led Mendel to discover the fundamental laws of genetics.

The original image is a photograph of a bas relief of Mendel in the abbey where he lived and worked in Brno, Czech Republic.
