Japanese Tea Bowl

Japanese Tea Bowl
(Chawan)
The Brief: Design a Japanese Tea Bowl to be used in The Way Tea ceremony. The bowl had to be in reference to and deeply-rooted in Wabi-Sabi.
Handmade Bowls
Part of the research was to make four handmade bowls from white clay. The technique used to make the bowls was pinching. Two of the bowls were then glazed and colour was added  using oxides. These bowls were used as inspiration for the conceptual phase.

Clay Pattern
The pattern was made from white clay. This was to allow for easy removal from mould and to give the finished product a more handmade look and feel.
