Wearable Technology - Fireflies

Fireflies

The dress is installed with PIR sensors, LED lights and veneer, a thin piece of wood wrapped around the dress. Inspired by fireflies and their species being endangered in the future due to human activities (deforestation, light pollution etc), the dress mimics the fireflies in their natural habitat with the wood veneer symbolising the “dying” forest. When in close proximity with the sensors, the LED lights up. Upon closer observation, one can see at a point the lights will light up simultaneously, mimicking the mating behaviour of certain fireflies species. The lights die down when there is no one near the dress. This act of collaboration shows how there is a co-dependant relationship between fireflies and humans. In donning the dress, the model represents the hope and possibility in finding a peaceful balance for humans and fireflies to co-exist, so long as we live sustainably within our means.

This dress was exhibited at the ArtScience museum.
