FUTURE CULTURE (2016-)
Connecting Staten Island's waterfront
PROJECT SUMMARY
Staten Island’s North Shore waterfront is home to hundreds of artists and arts organizations in the Naturally Occurring Cultural District of St. George, Tompkinsville, and Stapleton. This diverse downtown community hosts multiple private development projects and related NYC government initiatives, such as the Bay Street Corridor Plan, and faces challenges in planning for cohesive, quality public space during this rapid transformation.

The Design Trust and its Fellows have engaged local artists, the cultural industry, and developers in planning their community together to inform strategies for neighborhood revitalization, sustainability, and equitable economic development. Working with the community, we have developed and communicated a vision for the waterfront that contains actionable design, planning, and policy recommendations to share with key public officials and private stakeholders. A two-part exhibition, four-edition newspaper and recommendations will influence the area rezoning and serve as a cornerstone and framework for creative placemaking by the borough arts council Staten Island Arts, the local arts and ethnic community and developers.
