I had previously gotten to about 70% done on the first iteration of this concept and then decided to start over. It hurt my fragile artist ego a bit at the time, but I'm so glad that I did.
I'm pushing myself not just to get the impression of an outline of hands, but the depth and dimension too. This second attempt was much more successful in my opinion at conveying that shape. It takes a bit of anatomy knowledge, a bit of dumb luck and a whole lot of experimentation. I learned something new every time I opened this file while working on it.
I'm hoping to make this a mini-series, and finish out the other stages of the game.
I decided to record the entire* process, which was originally 20+ hours. I have it sped up to be about 13 mins below.
* I forgot a few times to hit record and also had to cut out the times I checked FB and was just absentmindedly staring at the screen wondering what to deal with next.
