Guatemala Free City
An economical approach to urban design and planning that integrates general and spontaneous rules as integral components for the creation of free cities.
The project favours a free market system as an alternative to the existing in today´s cities. After a research and analysis on data about some of the ¨almost¨ free cities in the world, mainly information in terms of economical freedom and governmental systems. The conclusions were that most of them respond to a system based on general and spontaneous rules rather than governmental imposed and restrictive ones. The urban proposal integrates the system of the ´kiloblock´: by exploiting the urban possibilities of one square kilometre block, the design aspire to provide the necessary rules for a free city to work. The location was practically decided in a sea shore area to have maritime trade area nearby as well as finding more opportunities in the seafront area.
