"Exploring The Impact of Hyper Sexualisation On Young Girls: The Influence Of Popular Music Videos and Lyrics"
A typographic approach - using lyrics which are selected from the essay and images which represent the relevant content.

ABSTRACT:
When is it too early to be sexy? Many of us don’t really understand this term until later in life, however we are introduced to the idea of ‘sexy’ very early on. Mass media plays a vital role in encouraging, creating attitudes and educating children. Thus, a great concern arises on how beneficial or damaging this information could be to the potential leaders of our the future. This thesis focuses particularly on the hyper-sexualised content in popular music videos and lyrics that young children, more specifically girls, are exposed to. It seeks to explore this discourse and the negative impact it has on young girls’ development. The examination of music videos and lyrics addresses the blatant hyper-sexualisation, unsparing misogyny and objectification caused. A closer look at the voices of young girls aged fourteen to sixteen who have participated in surveys around this subject aims to reveal the distressing nature caused by this media consumption. Subsequently, this thesis uncovers the confusion caused amongst how young girls ought to ‘be’ in order to fit into society’s ideals and developing a narrower mind frame which focuses largely on their outer appearance. This research contributes to the on going rhetoric around the media’s impact on children’s lives. It is important to consider real ‘ample evidence’ as suggested by the APA (2007) “sexualisation has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, and healthy sexual development.” How could this not be a cause for concern?
