This was a fun little project - the mother of one of my friends has recently opened a fish-and-chip shop in Redcliffe, Australia; giving it the lovely New Zealand-centric name 'Te Chippy'. Looking for ways to promote the shop, she hit upon the idea of having a set of colouring book pages that kids could work on while their parents waited for their orders (or even have a go at colouring them in themselves!) - but rather than just having some generic public-domain-everyone-else-uses-them stuff, she decided to secure purpose-made, fishing / fish-and-chips themed artwork unique to Te Chippy. And, having a long association with my illustration skills, she asked me to mix up a tasty batch of stuff.... Isn't that nice? I created a diverse series of concept sketches for the Te Chippy gang to peruse and critique, which - by tallying up their votes for the best out of each group - were narrowed down to a final four (and it was neck-and-neck with some of the voting); and then developed into the finished set of colouring pages! Much fun was had, research into exactly what a fishing rod is supposed to look like was done; and at least one scuba diver needed therapy afterwards - but isn't that what graphic design is all about?
