In Cold Blood: Penguin Student Award | Book Design

Penguin Brief:

We are looking for a cover design which breaks boundaries in the same way that the book did. It should be bold, maybe even shocking, yet remain true to the book, reflecting both its literary merit and its chilling content.

“In Cold Blood is regarded by many critics as the pioneering work in the true crime genre. It is a startling, true account of a gruesome crime and a skilfully researched piece of journalism – it is a literary masterpiece brilliantly imagined which reads like the most gripping of thrillers.”  - Penguin
Cover Design

The book cover visually represents capital punishment because it is a major theme within the narrative which has been overlooked in previous covers. I approached the cover typographically to show the literary merit of the book. The colour palette is black, white and red to keep the design within the genre of true crime however, its point of difference is that it is simple and subtle thus appealing to a more contemporary and mature audience.
