The objective of the project was to create a community museum in Germantown, Philadelphia, based on two artists of our choosing - one with 2-D artwork and one with 3-D sculptural artwork. Based on my concept of illusion and the unexpected, I chose Olafur Eliasson, known for his multi-media sculptures and exhibits, and Michelangelo Pistoletto, known for his mirror paintings. By combining the artwork of these two artists, I was able to design a space that would stimulate the creativity and imagination of the Germantown community. The Illusion Museum is a very directional space, where visitors enter through the vestibule and are taken directly to the second floor in order to work their way from top to bottom. Visitors are unable to see the protruding main exhibit space, the black mass seemingly arising from "hell", until after they pass the ticketing and are truly engaged into the space. The small exhibit space, which exhibits Eliasson's lighting sculptures, was inspired by the forms and materials from Eliasson's works and allows for an interchange of exhibits throughout time.
