My ART 230 personal business card design final in a digital mock-up.

The purpose of this student project was to learn how to use typography in a decorative and informative way by designing a personal business card. The card is to function as a self-promotional piece to secure work as a freelance creative. The student's name and/or initials had to be used a creative design element. No decoration could be used except for basic shapes of color and we were limited to fonts in the student font pack.

The process included creating multiple sketches, digital renders in black, refining the design in black, creating digital variations in color, choosing a final, preparing the file for printing—including color separations and final mechanical mockups.

— THE PROCESS —
Initial business card sketches. You can't see where the final will come from at this point.

First try at the digital business card. You can start to see where my final card will come from in #1. This is the step where I had to choose fonts. The project required at least two different fonts. Klint Std Bold has good weight with a straight spine which worked well with my initials. I used it in many of my initial digital sketches.

Digital variations in black and white on theme #1. Image #2 will become the final. Do you think I made the right choice?

Color variations on image #2 with process color call outs. The project required 3 colors and black. I decided on the blue, khaki and taupe variation because I thought it looked a little more professional than the others.

My design as a 4-up, composite, press-ready business card with bleeds in three spot colors plus black. I created the printer's template in Illustrator. This part of the assignment was for extra credit.
