How to Make a Campfire (Booklet Design)

Project: Create a Booklet (4x6 inches)
Where: University of Missouri – St. Louis
Professor: Kathleen Robert

Project Overview:

In this class project, we were assigned to create a booklet, which will guide readers to learn to do something through simple illustrated steps. The assignment also emphasis on the visual look of the booklet. Studies have shown that most people learn visually, so the booklet has to be attractive and eye-catching.

My thought process and rational:

My booklet is about learning How to Make a Campfire. I design it keeping in mind that my target audience will be people who love outdoor activities and nature. So for my color choices, I used orange for the title because orange is view as friendly, and energetic. Two qualities that best fit people who are very actives. Then brown is the predominant color for each page. Brown is conservative and more related to nature and earth.
For the illustrations, I designed a unique background, which I would only change each step of making the Campfire. This way, reader would not be distracted by too many different illustrations. I used a lot of grainy and crosshatching effects to apply pattern the  illustrations to stay in the concept of outdoor activities, earth, dust and other nature related leisure time.
