Edinburgh Festival Branding

Despite collectively being the third largest global event in terms of tickets sold, the Edinburgh Festivals have no distinctive identity. This project is a visual reimagining of the 12 Festivals that make up the year-long citywide celebrations.
To reflect the global appeal of the Festival, the identity logo and typeface was based on the simple shapes that make up the flags of the world. By using the universally recognised language of flags, the identity reflects the global appeal of the festivals.
To clarify the different Festivals on offer and when they take place, a guide was created: it takes the form of an expandable sheet, visualising the idea of the Festivals being a combination of lots of different things, rather than the stereotypical and most commonly known summer events.
Flyers created for the Festivals take the form of detachable pieces that vary in colour and image: by interacting with the flyers, new and unique design combinations are revealed. This reflects the idea that the more people get involved with the Festivals, the more new and exciting things they see.
Event-specific posters use the identity typeface in a playful way to demonstrate the vibrancy and dynamic nature of the different Festivals.
