The wording of the exercise was tochoose a spot and propose a project on in, all related to the topic “monument”.
The chosen spot was in Brugsepoort aneighbourhood west of Ghent. This is a working-class area from the 19 thcentury and developed during the industrial revolution. Nowadays it has astrong presence of immigrants, mostly from Turkey.
After studying the neighbourhood wefound out that a lot of social facilities where needed, so we decided to designa place where people can improve their social life. At the same time it wasimportant for us to establish a sense of belonging and proud into the citizenssuch that improves the people’s behaviour towards the neighbourhood.

Brugsepoort, Gent
The chosen city block was entirely builtup inside by many constructions. Some of those buildings had an interest due totheir identity or their age. So we decide to keep five of them to be includedon the design.
Once determined the scenario of the spotwas time to set up the design strategies and the program of the project. We wanted to understand the five existing buildings belonging to the sameproject and acquiring part of the uses each. That’s why we took the decision tocreate a functions stripe linking the four main volumes. The stripe is formalizedby three new connexion boxes which divides the free space in two landscapes, anurban and a leisure one.
The functions line is reinforced byplacing a water stripe with the purpose to focus the circulation inside thefurniture’s warehouse.
