Devil in the Rain

This was a piece for The Sleepover Society for July 2016. Our theme was rain and I wanted to do a piece that showed how people feel when it rains.
"For this month’s theme, I wanted to do something that touches on the emotions that we feel towards rain. For some people the rain is a bother, something that ruins plans of spending a day outdoors. For others a rainy day is a happy one, as they get to spend their time in the comforts of their home, probably under a blanket reading a good book and drinking coffee. Then, there are those who love the rain, especially playing under it. I was like this when I was a kid, but unfortunately we weren’t allowed to play in the rain. Now that I’m older, I prefer windy days over rainy ones.
At first I wanted to represent sadness in the rain, since it’s the emotion that I think most people associate with it; dark, gloomy clouds bringing down tears from the sky. But then I decided to go the opposite direction, and make a doodle about how the rain could bring one happiness. I tried to think of who would love the rain the most, and I realized someone who has never experienced it before would probably be the happiest in it. That’s when I came up with a devil.
This devil has spent all his life in hell, surrounded by fire and brimstone. He knows only the heat, and the dryness of it all. So I take him out of there and put him in the woods at night where there’s a gentle downpour. The sound of the rain tapping on the leaves and branches of the trees, and on the blades of grass; the soothing feeling of the raindrops splashing on his skin make him so happy that he, with all the frogs watching, starts to smile and dance."
