One of the quite interesting (and common) design challenges posed by my corporate newsletter projects, was how to use photographic assets from the standard head-and-shoulders employee portrait library in a creative way. Working with clip art and stock images was standard. Production limitation was often another: in my client's case, the publication needed to be created on a pre-formatted template and print in just one color or, if the budget allowed; one color plus a spot color. This challenge was a good opportunity to take advantage of duotone effects, tints, and two-tone illustration effects.
