Posts from a project I've been working on for a while now. The Berkeley College Republicans are the largest student political group at UC Berkeley. Sadly though, their website and official logo do not portray their status accordingly... The logo's actually a mess. So, because I'm a good sport, I like designing, and kinda wanted to pad my resume a little bit, I decided to give the student group a little image makeover, and make a new website for them (I may do a later post on the website design... maybe)
Yes... This was their logo. Keep in mind they're supposed to be the biggest political student group in one of the single most politically active campuses in the nation... I know.

So above you can see the finished logo. This is the primary, official version, with two other color variants down below to be used more sparingly and depending on whether a certain logo use calls for it.
The design was simple: Make a modern looking logo that at the same time looks timed, to pay an adequate nod to the "Old" in the "Grand Old Party". The logo icon was heavily inspired by the icon of the Republican Party of Virginia, with even the blue color code being the same. The red was initially a more maroon looking kind of red, more deep. Visually it looked better, but eventually I decided to opt for a more bright red when – while doing the website – I realized that the browser engines in Safari and Chrome didn't properly display that type of red, and so it had to go.

The logotype was also very simple. Originally I was going to play with many different serif fonts and see which one stuck, while keeping the "Berkeley College Republican" name intact. Eventually however, not only did I much better like the simplified name "Berkeley Republicans", but I also decided rather quickly to settle with Adobe Caslon Pro and all caps.
Hence, the logo you see above.

Finally, here's a closer look at the logo icon. It honestly looks pretty neat, in my opinion.
