Self-Initiated
For my self–initiatedproject I created my own brief on a topic that I wanted to explore further. Ichose the subject of Fairy tales as I myself enjoy reading the books. I feltreading these at a young age opened my imagination and taught me to picture thescenes rather than like today being told what they look like and how the storygoes through film. I choose to look intofairy tales and chose 3 well-known stories, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzeland Sleeping Beauty. My brief I set myself is to bring these books back to lifeto get children to want to read the book rather than watching the film. I didan extensive amount of research into the origins, the versions of the storiesand chose to redesign the covers of the books using the Brothers Grimmversions. These are what audiences consider the originals although there weremore before.
My designs had to be new, modern,eye catching, fun and simple and unisex, I did not want to over complicate theydesigns as my target audience is children aged 9+. My book covers are verysimple; they use silhouettes of the characters and the settings for each storyas the book covers themselves with an added texture to give a hint of 3D. I didthis so it resembles a child making the pieces themselves at home and isinstantly recognizable to catch their attentions. I used bold colours aschildren like bright items. I chose appropriate colours so the audiencerecognizes the stories when placed within their window displays, Red, Blue andYellow.
The selling point of my design is the free gift ofwhich is what will bring both children and adults into buy the book. I havechosen Waterstones as the shop of my choice to show my designs of as it I oneof the biggest bookshops in the world. The gift itself is a bag that contains toyset of 6 items for the children to play with. Instead of the book and bag beingseparate, the book is A6 size and when bought, the book comes inside the bagwith the toy set. The bags themselvesare canvas and have a simple silhouette on the front of a part of the book witha character shaped tag to explain what is in the bag. My final pieces I feelreally bring the stories to life, they are modern, eye catching and bold. Bybuying these books I hope to make sure children read more and enjoy the booksrather than the films.
