En las comunidades de Hecelchakán -en particular en la zona de Pomuch, Campeche (México)- se celebra el ritual milenario Hanal Pixán conocido como "limpieza de huesos". Es una tradición heredada de la cultura maya que reúne ritos relacionados con el cultivo del maíz y los ritos de la iglesia católica.
Desde la primer semana de octubre los pobladores comienzan purificando los "huesitos". Deben estar limpios para la víspera del Día de Muertos. En este proceso se les "cambia la ropa", como le llaman al paño bordado, indispensable para su paso al otro mundo. Los huesos se limpian con agua, cal, pinceles y brochas.
La caja donde descansan los "huesitos" se deja abierta, para que "no se ahoguen" y se les enciende una vela para que ilumine su camino. Los niños y los adultos se celebran aparte. A los mayores se les comparte pibipollo, que es una especie de tamal cocinado en un hoyo en tierra, además de chocolate.
