An Anthology of Decorated Papers

This project was done as part of my university degree. The brief was to design and layout the Introduction of P.J.M. Marks' An Anthology of Decorated Papers and also the book cover. In addition, I was required to produce a print specification for the project.

My book is B5 in size (176mm x 250mm), hardback and perfect bound with a vellum belly band.

Considering the contents and the readers of the anthology, the design allows the images to stand out at sizes that reveal as much detail as possible of the artifacts. The grid structure allows variable open space on each page – by using a combination of 2 and 3 columns for image and text respectively, providing a consistent but not monotonous reading experience. Typographic detail enables the reader to quickly locate notes and figures. Overall, the book should come across as a refreshing and light reading experience.

The image chosen for the book cover is one of the images from the contents and characterises the variety and visual interest of decorated papers. The vellum band was used so as not to detract from the visual interest of the cover.
