This is a mock commercial that needed to be created for the end of our first year at The Animation School. The assignment was to create a 30 second TV commercial for a phone, existing or fictitious, using 3D animation only.

As a proud owner of a HTC phone, I decided to create a commercial that was based around there 'YOU' campaign, portraying a fictitious phone called the 'Vivacious'. Part of our criteria was to accurately and convincingly portray the chosen manufacturers brand and vision. I saw this as a great opportunity to integrate 3D animation with 2D animation.

The final video was rendered in 720p at 25 FPS. For those who are interested in the technical details, the rendering took 22 hours on a single 6-core i7 processor using Final Gather and Mental Ray as the Indirect illumination and renderer respectively. Maya was used for the asset creation, lighting, animation and rendering.  After Effects was used to create the 2D animation, which was rendered and then piped into the background plane in Maya as a texture. It was also used to create the screen animation which itself was piped into the screen texture of the phone.

Considering how the 2D and 3D animation had to be integrated, timing was crucial to make sure the animations came together properly. All in all, a fun project and one that I hope compliments the HTC brand.

And a special thanks to Nuno Martins, my lecturer, for all the encouragement and motivation.

And to Kris, for all the help, support and love. Without that, I probably wouldnt have been able to turn this out as quickly as I did.
beauty shot of the front of the phone.
Another beauty shot, of the rear this time.
Having the background 2D animation and the foreground 3D animation developed separately meant that the planning and timing of the movements had to be spot on.
having the phone jump to the beat of the music, as well as having the screen animation and background animation move in sync was a nice little challenge to take on.
Here the screen animation needed to mimic HTC's actual animation style when the window frames scroll through. The added challenge was for it to match the background animated text in timing...
Ending the commercial the HTC way. They trully are quietly brilliant. And quite briliant.
