Adaptive Re-Use
Third Year Design Studio - Fall 2010
Professor: Charles Frederick
Site: Lakeside Sand & Gravel, Mantua, Ohio
This project is based on adapting a site to changes in function. Lakeside Sand & Gravel will need to change the program once the mining is done. This site is the entrance, which is an area where historic mining equipment is stored and maintained.  This project proposes that the site be further developed as a museum that displays the mining equipment in a controlled environment. The current site configuration doesn’t allow all mining equipment to be sheltered from the weather. By creating a large walkthrough space it would allow the equipment to be maintained while also allowing visitors to experience the machinery first-hand. There is also a space for outdoor exhibits.

The museum is designed in such a way that viewpoints are framed to create an indoor museum experience that still connects the visitors to the outdoors.  Certain parts of the building focus the attention on the machinery on display while transitional spaces draw attention to the outside. There is a second level path that allows visitors to view the machinery from the top. This is especially important for the larger pieces. The glass roof over the second story catwalk has a structure that imitates the structure of a typical crane. The cascading slope of the building seperates spaces into segements for viewing.
