Design & Manufacture of a skateboard

South West College Promotional Skateboard
This was a group project were we were tasked to create a piece of promotional content for the Foundation degree in Design (Product & Graphic Design), at South West College that would incorporate and advertise the many different techniques that are used within the course, such as laser cutting for the grip tape, 3D Printing for the wheels, CNC Machining  for the deck and the use of the Adobe Packages to design the art on the bottom.
I picked two sketches that I liked to bring forward in the development of the skateboard art, these were taken from the sketch then drawn in Adobe Illustrator using a graphics tablet
Rendered CAD drawing of skateboard using auto desk Fusion 360
The Male and Female former's were created using a 5 axis CNC machine, this allowed us to clamp material in between to create the rough outline of the shape that could be later cut out on the CNC the form the deck.
One of the biggest steps was to create the jig to allow us to cut the skateboard deck out. The is a few major aspects we needed to consider, one of these was getting it to clamp onto the jig using the vacuum. To do this we created the channels to allow the air to flow by pocketing out a section.
The grip was cut out using a laser cutter to the correct shape of the board from an old industrial sander belt that had ripped. I applied using glue and various clamps to hold it to the surface of the board. The design was cut using a vinyl cutter from the earlier design on Illustrator. My manufactured board deck side view compared to a store bought skateboard deck.
