In this project, we considered how to design two different words by using a negative spaces effectively and connect them together. We made mind maps first, to get a good idea for our designing, and then we sketched whatever came into our brain. That helped a lot to create final works.

Eleven Zebra
I realized the space between zebra’s legs looks like a number one. It has four legs in total so I can use the negative space to make double 1 then be able to organize them as eleven. This is how this idea came up with.

At first, I was designing zebra’s legs as shorter and also did not use any color for the background. However, I found that it was difficult to find eleven from the negative space. So I changed its legs longer and made clearer eleven. Also I took almost all details of zebra’s face and colored with black for the background so that the contrast of white and black came to be clear and it helped to find eleven more easily.

The first thing I experienced from this design is drawing skills through illustrator. I did not so many chances to draw a picture by using illustrator. It was kind of tough at first but I got a drawing skills step by step. The most difficult part was organizing all body parts of the zebra. This was a very good exercise to learn a new skill of drawing.

Optimistic Food
For showing the word “Optimistic,” I was thinking several ways but most of them were a little complicated. Then I thought just smiling face is good to explain optimistic because it is important to design simply for using a negative space. The reason why I chose a cookie as food is that it is also easy to show a part of one bite.

I was sketching smiley face by using details of a face such as eyes and mouth but I realized it does not work if I add them on the face, so I decided to show a optimistic face with only outlines. On the sketch, I put a color on the cookie but I switched the color to white on the cookie and black on the background because it shows up smiley face more clearly.

This one was pretty much challengeable for me because the word, “Optimistic” sounds abstract. When I was stuck for this one, I searched the meaning of this word again to do brainstorming. So from this design, I learned more skills of expression.

Party House
I actually designed two works for "Party House." They very first one is like there are two crackers and one house between them. However, I got some feedbacks that this design looks similar to martini logo. So I decided to rework for this in order to create ORIGINAL one. The shape I came up with for a house was only one pattern, so I considered how to make the house space with drawing "Party." Then finally got the idea to make a negative space for house shape between the person's two hands.

As the first step, I drew a house. And then started drawing girls hands among the edge of the house I drew. I had a door only first for the house but it did not show up the house door so much, so I added the windows as well. Well, I had to organize these windows to the entire picture of a Party, so I also added confetti behind the girl and connect them to the house windows.

Before I read critiques on the behance from other students, I intended to refer to the idea from martini logo. However, it made people feel that I stole the idea from them. So in this work, I realized that referring the idea and following the idea are totally different and mine was the latter. I studied the importance of the policy of copyrights and importance of creating the own work.

Mad Wings
The only idea I got for the word “Mad” was mad face. So I draw mad face first and started thinking to connect with “Wings.” I thought what if I put bird’s wings as a mad face’s hair and make a shape of its face like a bird’s body. Then this design came out.

As I said in the first paragraph, I started drawing several types of mad faces and also several types of birds (of course wings as well because these are the main). While I was combining different kinds of mid faces and wings, I found a good match. It is woman’s mad face and peacock wings.

On the first hand sketching, I did not draw the details of the wings. I just drew wings easily but it made people confused which part should be wings. So I added more patterns on the wings to show this part should be a wing! I learned what I can see does not mean that everyone else can see. I have to identify each design clearly.

Red Town
Before I begin working for these words I could not find the way to explain a “Red” by drawing a picture. When I asked about his problem to Ms. Moore, she said the only thing she could find was just to color red somewhere. This advice gave me a hint to create this idea. I decided to use a blood to show a “Red” instead of using a red color because everybody knows blood is red. Once I got this idea, the rest of works was easy. Making town on the negative space was easy step as a new idea.

At first, I sketched dead people with blood and showed a town there. However it seemed little bit strange for me, so I changed some parts of the design but basically same idea. I changed it to a hand showed one finger up very closely. Then draw a scar and blood is running through the finger. Drawing a town in the blood running was the same idea, so there it is!

From this design, I learned it sometimes needed to draw a picture exaggeratedly. I drew the index finger bigger than the other fingers because I had to show blood running and a town in there. Designing sometimes needs the interesting ideas. This is what I learned from this.

Fiery Flog
I though a flog looks easy to make a negative space design, so I tried make a combination of flog and other words. Finally I found the best one, which is a fire because fire drawing can be a mouth of flog as well.
I started drawing a fire AND mouth of the flog first and added two lines to draw a fire as a match. And then kept drawing rest of body parts of flog by following the edges of the match so that we can see a match in the middle but also the flog in the entire picture.

My final work has black flog and white fire but these were opposite when I first drew this. Ms. Moore told me if I change these colors, it helped more to make it a negative space logo effectively. I studied the arrangement of using a color is the most important thing for negative space design.
