Light Sculpture (Glitch Mapping)
I travelled over to Gdansk (Poland) at the end of November 2009 to participate in the NARRACJE FESTIVAL (26 Nov- 6 Dec 2009). Working with local Polish artist DOROTA WALENTYNOWICZ, we created a real-time light sculpture which was sound reactive to its surrounding environment.
Project documentation video
Dorota explains a little more about the building, “The effect of projected light has caused the whole material of the façade to manifested itself in new ways. The façade consists of various surfaces, each of these reflecting the light differently. Its made of various materials, starting from metal and concrete, ending with glass windows behind which people who work here have hung curtains of various transparency. This building is a natural mosaic, which we use and underline in the work, trying to extract it from the dark”.

A custom Quartz Composer patch was created to operate within VDMX, enabling real-time sound analysis from microphones placed around the perimeter of the building. Performing over 3 nights in November/December, we were worried about weather conditions but luck was on our side and it remained dry and snow free, only raining during the last half hour of the final performance.

Measuring a vast 72m x 56m, the CTO building presented a boldly ambitious surface for projection. To achieve this feat, two 30,000 lumen HD projectors were stacked atop each other and mounted on a three-story scaffold tower, strategically erected on the top floor of a parking garage.
