New Sustainable Model For ‘Corabastos’ Distribution Center And ‘La Vaca’ Wetlands
Completed: June 9th, 2016
Assignment
In a country where inequality, violence and poverty thrives, a broad spectrum of problematic presents big challenges for architects. Pontifical Xavierian University has always been committed to encourage students to aim their main objectives in life to serve and build peace for a better country. That is what Xavierian Spirit means. In the architecture career students have 1 year to present a project that proposes a solution to a relevant problematic within any city of Colombia. We are free to choose the subject, scale, type, scope and reach of the proposal and we are assigned by the faculty to a director, whose role is to guide and make relevant corrections and insights throughout the whole process. The project was divided in two parts: 6 months of full time research and field work to get the main problematic clear, present the main objectives and propose a solution for that problematic. The following 6 months are dedicated to design a formal solution diving into all the scales possible: from an urban master plan to a specific architectural project including construction details if relevant.
Project Statement
Corabastos binds a series of big-scale issues for the city: critical urban spaces and nearby wetlands decay, food safety and food borne diseases, malnutrition, forced child labour, mafia and extortion, organized crime, prices monopolies, truck dependence leading to road failures due to heavy cargo entering the city, waste management - daily 11.000 tons of food enter, 4.500 is wasted, and the list goes on. The Mayor and the urban and local government entities agree that Corabastos must be rethought. This thesis holds the idea that Corabastos should be relocated and restructured outside the metropolitan area to redevelop economic dynamics at a regional scale and reincorporate satellite towns into a network of new sustainable supply centers for the city.
In a country that has suffered the longest and most brutal armed conflict in the Western Hemisphere, a conflict for land that still thrive on a post-conflict and peace building dialogues, decentralize agriculture would favour local and small farmers and bring 6 million forcibly displaced people (living in the city with no opportunities) back to their lands, strengthening municipalities into self-sustainable communities. Vertical farming in cities and more sustainable practices in the country side tainted with community building should stand as a solution to an armed conflict which original cause was the struggle for the land ownership and a lack of agrarian reform. This means a new model for Corabastos to become the ‘new plenty’ for a society drowned in a post-conflict sorrow. A model for peace and rehabilitation.
Project Description
Corabastos is the main actor of the destruction of the wetlands like La Vaca, the main objective of this project is to recover the original wetland area to make it the heart and engine of sustainable dwellings and urban amenities, and fit them in a new biogeochemical equation. Vertical farming and life-sustaining systems – similar to the ones developed for space travel missions, will provide organic food harvested inside buildings, and electricity from waste, biomass and sewage waters. The vertical equation presents an opportunity both timely and unique: 1 million square meters needed to feed 10 thousand people can be stacked indoor in a 100 square meters on a 30-story shelving. It is not only a space matter but a efficiency matter where a vertical farm system uses only 5% of the water normally used and can increase yields by up to 20 times normal production on a year-round pest-free controlled environment.
This project aims to demonstrate that abundance and forgiveness goes hand in hand. Self-sustained housing based as vertical farms would bring ex-militants and forcibly displaced farmers together to work with what they do best: grow life and turn it into food for us. The area of Corabastos, full of stores and food deposit warehouses would turn into a smart city that produces food and energy and runs on the health of a wetland ecosystem at the mercy of strong interconnected communities, producing thousands of new jobs.
Cultivos
