Grid-based typeface

University year 1 project- I thought it would be interesting to create typefaces based upon flags of capital cities. There is much less awareness of city flags than there is of national flags, so I felt creating typefaces would be a unique way of promoting them. Alphabetically, Amsterdam is the first capital in Europe, so I began with this city.
Initial typeface idea at varying point sizes (not to scale).
I feel the letters are much clearer in white on a black background. In green, the typeface has the appearance of an alien language.
Simplified further, with fewer individual elements than my original glyphs.
Using my letterforms, I created a design celebrating the typeface. The pattern at the top of the composition is intended to represent the colourful canal houses found in Amsterdam, the red arc is inspired by Python Bridge, and the shapes between them are supposed to depict bicycles.
