Joseph Mallozzi's profile

Post-Apocalyptic Comic Book Arcadia

Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, well known for the Stargate SG-1 television series and its spinoffs, is currently working on the second season of Dark Matter. When not engaged in television projects, Joseph Mallozzi enjoys reading science fiction comic books. One of his favorites is Arcadia.

Written by Alex Paknadel and illustrated by Eric Scott Pfeiffer, Arcadia is the story of humanity’s survival after an apocalyptic outbreak of papillomavirus killed 99 percent of everyone on Earth in the early 21st century. To preserve what they could, governments around the world scanned the brains of four billion people before they died and saved them in digital form. The digital models were then sent to huge data centers, where the people “lived” in a utopian computer simulation called Arcadia.

The remaining 1 percent of survivors had to simultaneously eke out an existence in the ruined physical world and to supply the energy needed to run Arcadia. The comic book sets up interesting conflicts between the real world and the simulated world regarding allocation of scarce resources, politics, power, human nature, and the survival of the fittest.
