Project One: Birthing an Iris in Five Days

For the first project we were to document change over a five day period. I chose to document the change a flower undergoes as it blooms.
Inspiration
I chose to draw an Iris as this was the flower given to my mother when I was born and subsequently on my birthday every year. It is my favourite flower however I realised that generally I never notice how a flower blooms and the process it undergoes.

Reasoning
After considering the process of change I wondered about the process from a The a small closed off bud into an open masterpiece. I considered the colours that changes, the form, and the impact the flower makes throughout each stage of its process.

Technique
I used a 0.5mm fine point pen to sketch the image. For the upload I took a photo of the sketch and edited it on photoshop to highlight and improve the quality of the image.

Process
Much like early Matisse and Picasso line works, I tried to connect my eyes and hand by watching the flower and tracing its form without taking my eyes of it. I chose to draw like this because I believe it produces a ultimately true form.

Reflection
I loved watching how the flowers form changed, from the bud, small and protected. Into the open flower, large and vulnerable. I also noticed that as soon as the flower had opened it began its decay.
Unfortunately the flower wasn't opening very quickly and so some human interaction came into play and so to promote the bloom the stem was cut shorter.
