Branding—Houston Pilots

Houston Pilots is an 85 year old association of organized shipping services established to provide pilots and information to ships’ captains to successfully navigate the Port of Houston’s waterways. Their tag line is the “Silent Servants of Progress”, which demonstrates their rich history in the Houston Ship Channel and their pride in their contributions to the Port of Houston.

Houston Pilots regularly provide guidance to the Port Authority and other governmental bodies with regards to safety and integrating technology to maintain one of the top ten ports in the world. There is a juxtaposition created between the traditional services and the modern technology today’s pilots use to translate crucial information for safe passage and port security.

Presenting Houston Pilots as cutting edge while still being true to their root traditions is one challenge. Another challenge; Houston is a world port, with a multitude of languages and cultures entering and existing the channel, all using the Houston Pilots services. For this reason, substantial consideration should be given to a commonly recognizable symbol regardless of language. Something familiar in shape and form or a relatable character would be beneficial. Since a large portions of imports come from Asia it seems prudent to consider Asian cultural factors.

Presented in the following pages are probable logo updates. Three very different approaches were explored, Typographical, Abstract and Symbolic/Pictorial.
