Introduction
This whole project, part of my thesis, started from an object of daily use. The brief, in fact, was to create a company and a communicative installation based on an item of common use, in my case the light bulb. Therefore me and my group have created the Phos company, name which means light in greek. The company is primarily based on three values: tadition and innovation, familiarity and sociability. We wanted people to see the light bulb as a fireside which brings people together, creates interaction and stimulates ideas. With our installation we wanted to create a personal connection between people and technology, giving them the opportunity to interact directly with the light.
Logo
Phos logo is really peculiar. We decided to express the idea of the light bulb using the O as an hypotetical source of light, which is what Phos means in greek, and using the fractal we have created the symbol you can see below. Our payoff is "live your light" because we wanted to express that our light bulbs are born to accompany people during their life, supporting their activities.
Brand Identity
Our identity is based on the contrast light and shadow. In fact, we decided to use a light color in the front of our objects and a dark color in the back. Moreover, it has been used a hole to let the light pass. We chose the font Karbon because its creator mixed the Futura with the Gill Sans, two typefaces which are now part of the tradition but at their time they wanted to be extremely innovative and modern. Finally, we have projected an icon system to express once more the idea of shadow.
Advertising System
Phos advertising system was created to express the idea that our light bulbs accompany people during their daily routine. In order to express this idea, we have combined photos of different activities with our light bulbs revealed by lamps in the style of our icons.
The Communicative Machine
To create the installation, we decided to insert the light bulb into a trasparent sphere in order to create a maneuverable object to interact with.
In brief, in the installation users will find themselves into a dark room with three spheres, which will initially lay on the table with neutral light. Thereafter, when the users will pick them up, the light will change color according to the heat of their hands. Turning or shaking the spheres, the light will change color gradually or randomly. Finally, on one of the walls of the installation, the users will realize that they can “paint with the light” and that they can collaborate to create unique lighting effects.
