This project was a collaboration with three others, Steve Lucas, Liz Fangmeyer and Jamie Hagan, to design a series of postcards based on a poem. Through a process of brainstorming and mind-mapping together we developed the theme of renewal and then selected the poem Sacrifices by Richard Jones. In the poem, the narrator collects the winter's ashes from his woodstove and ceremoniously gives them to the earth in anticipation of spring, using them to sow a new garden.
Our collaborative process was a combination of individual exploration of typography and image-making with intermittent group decision making, concept development and critique. We selected a sequence of words from the poem related to winter, ashes and death and burned them out from heavy, textured paper using a laser cutter and wood burner. Glossy floral images are revealed underneath, signifying renewal of the earth and human spirit. As the connotations of the words move from warm to cool, the colors underneath move from cool to warm in contrast. The full poem is printed lightly on the backs of the postcards. Each of us contributed to photography and final production. The set includes eleven postcards—one for each of the narrator’s actions in the poem—and is bound with a strip of flower seed paper that can be planted.
