'Dog Heaven'

I had an opportunity to paint an electricity box in Kallio, Helsinki’s hipster neighbourhood. The street happened to be where my grandmother had lived. She had a German Shepherd called Woody (Guthrie), and every time we passed a local snack kiosk, he would put his paws on a counter and get a sausage. As I was sketching, I had a vivid image of a dog surrounded by hotdog butterflies, and I realised this would be a great memorial to “my” first dog as well as fitting in with the lively street food culture of the area today. I thought that a French Bulldog would be the perfect figure for the illustration as they are a such joyful character and currently one of the most popular breeds in the area. As I was painting I was told it was a great choice indeed: it made people smile and they thanked me.

This work is shortlisted for the best Finnish creative design (Vuoden Huiput) as part of 'Brahen taidekenttä' project.
