THROWDOWN

"Throwdown" is a short 6 minute film that I wrote, directed, and sound designed.  It was created while earning my MFA at Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts.

Synopsis: Two generations of hard rock meet as 80s rocker, Gabriel Kross, tries
to teach local metal drummer, Sam, the true meaning of rock. Sam
needs all the help he can get to calm his nerves before his band’s
first gig, but Gabriel’s advice might just ruin his reputation.

The initial idea still seems silly to me but I really wanted to make an off the wall comedy that involved this underground hard rock music scene.  The fact that heavy metal has transformed from this flamboyant style into a very masculine, serious style is humorous.  Why not mash the two and poke fun a little bit.

After writing the script the hardest part about this film was that it involved a gigantic drum solo scene at the end of the film.  It was a challenge coordinating a drum solo, pre-recording it with an impromptu studio, and then syncing it live and in post.  Luckily I found my lead actor, Parker McCabe, who just so happened to be a skilled actor and very proficient metal drummer.

We shot the film in two days with a crew of about 15 people.  Since the film takes place in 5 locations it was a struggle to company move and find clever ways to shoot scenes in as few setups as possible.

Selected for screening at Love Your Shorts Film Festival.

Due to this film being on the festival circuit it is not open for public viewing online.  If you wish to view it please contact me and I'll send you a link.
