The Human Condition

These images showcase the gritty reality of our lives through the unappreciated commonplace objects in our environment as visual metaphors to the nuances of life.
Rags and Riches
The idea of rags to riches is based on the process of growing up. When we are young, we are poor due to the lack of knowledge. But as we grow older, we became richer as our knowledge increases. In the modern world, the rich tend to look down on the poor. Hence, the glamourously dressed lady in the image is looking down at the poorly dressed lady. Using the spiral staircase as a visual metaphor, it symbolises the hierarchy from rags to riches.
The Quest
The idea of The Quest is base on life as a vicious cycle. When we embark on our journey to this world, there is no turning back. All we can do is to move forward. Using the revolving door as a visual metaphor, it represents the vicious cyclical cycle of our life.
Voyage and Return
Voyage represents the process of entering a fantasy and the return is the process of coming back to the reality. During our growing years, we tend to mimic the role of others, but in reality we are not what we imagine ourselves to be. In the mirror reflection, the one standing in front represents someone that we imagine ourself to be, but next to that reflection, it’s an image that we are familiar with. The multiple reflection effects of the mirrors represent the constant struggle of being in the fantasy and reality.
