Anthropologie
Retail Visual Display
As a visual display intern at the Anthropologie located at Hilldale Shopping Center in Madison, WI, I participated in transitioning the store display from the fall/winter season into the spring/summer season. I focused on designing and building sculptural elements – from large scale tosmall scale – and arranging merchandise into room-like spaces throughout the store to reflect the changes in the seasons. The vignettes in the store each portrayed a different concept that was predetermined although the guidelines were left open to encourage idea generation and a unique feel for each Anthropologie location.

Transitioning the store between seasons is necessary for Anthropologie. While the store is relatively stark in both layout and design, the merchandise and visual display help the store to come alive. The visual display and change in merchandise help the store to remain interesting for its customer as the concepts speak to the diverse clientele. Creating a clear link between the visual display and the merchandise is a strong example of Anthropologie’s goal of creating a lifestyle for its customer. The display defines a space within the store, creating a unique environment that highlights the product being sold without overpowering it.

The knowledge of design fundamentals, material and finish selection, design intent, and design appropriateness were important in working with the visual team on each concept. Additional knowledge of current design trends was necessary to incorporate new ideas throughout the store to keep the appearance modern and fresh while focusing on Anthropologie’s underlying aesthetic.
