Marble Dome at the Milan Salone

Marble Dome
Birsel + Seck
The Marble Dome was created for the Thus Spoke Marble exhibit at the Milan Salone 2012. Marble octagonal modules come together to form a circle on the floor from which they grow upward into a dome. As they reach the top, the modules naturally create small apertures that let in light. The dome is intentionally designed to be reminiscent of those of the great mosques and churches of Istanbul, from Kariye to the Hagia Sofia, to the Blue Mosque. As well as to evoke Ottoman hamams, where pinpoints of light pierced the ceiling and marble was the material of choice. Above all, we wanted the unity of material, form and time—past, present and future—to be expressed in this simple and pure space.
