Robin Duong's profile

Allegory Marketing

Allegory (n.)a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one (Google).

My name is Robin Duong and I'm a self-taught graphic designer and artist. I recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's of science in Environmental Economics and Policy and a minor in English and I plan to work in marketing or advertising.

Allegory Marketing is a chart of my progress as I learn how to create logos with Adobe Illustrator. Every week, I will randomly select one industry, one adjective, and one noun and create a logo for a hypothetical company named after that adjective-noun combination. If I'm feeling inspired, I'll also write a story, motto, or article for that company.

This week, my industry is biotechnology, my adjective is "half," and my noun is "cat," so I am creating a logo for a hypothetical company called Halfcat Biotechnology.

Obviously, the adjective and noun combinations won't always work out, but no matter how ridiculous the adjective and noun combination may be, if I think that a company within that industry has even the slightest chance of having that name, I'll design a logo.

I am proud and embarrassed to admit that the Halfcat Biotech logo was illustrated using only the Paintbrush tool and Eraser. I decided to take a fun twist on "half-cat" by creating a Halfcat: a biologically engineered werecat. The Halfcat's tail is a DNA double helix. The rungs of the double helix form cat eyes and fangs.

Ironically, while I am creating logos for imaginary corporations, I don't currently have my own logo or name for my own brand. "Allegory Marketing" is the name of this project, not of my own logo-designing and marketing services, but that may change. I like to think of myself as a storyteller, as it is stories that drive marketing, writing, and art.

Hey, everyone! I've been away on vacation and there was no internet available on the road, but I'm  back now. This is just one of those weeks where I get an odd adjective-noun pair! This was my first time using the Text On Path option, and it's pretty cool. I was going for a child-friendly design. A praying mantis holding a pencil was the first thing that came to mind.
