Diggit Root Vegetables
Label Design

Diggit Root Vegetables bring out the paleontologist in everyone! Like a paleontologist excavating fossils, the process for obtaining these vegetables means digging underground to the root of the plant. By forging a relationship between vegetables and dinosaurs, this could influence children to eat their vegetables or possibly even spark an interest in gardening or paleontology. By showing images of tools and using paleontology-related language, the very act of reading the label is a learning experience, giving insight into the vocabulary and processes used in paleontology. The design is inspired by elements of both gardening and paleontology, striking a balance between the two worlds. Can you diggit?

I decided to mix digital and hand-drawn elements in order to make the tags more dynamic. The hand-written type was inspired by handmade signs found at farmers’ markets and roadside fruit/vegetable stands. I drew the text very tall in order to reflect the massive size of dinosaurs. The palette was made from colors found in the root vegetables used. Since many of the same tools are used by both garderners and peleontologists, I decided to incorporate drawings of some of these tools. The tools stand for the process of obtaining both root vegetables and fossils, and remind us of that they both are found buried in the ground. The background image on the tags is a scanned peice of fabric, which I chose because it was weathered and worn, reminding me of both a paleontologist’s tool belt and a farmer’s burlap vegetable sack.
