Safe and sound is an app created to help users navigate their way through disasters, and to help guide them through the recovery process that comes after a significant or potentially life threatening disaster.
When I began designing this app, some of the first things I began to research were font and color. The general look and feel of this app needed to be mostly neutral tones and things that are easily legible, distinguishable and understandable. Effeciency was key throughout the whole process, wether it be the UI, or the way questioned were asked. Because of this goal, I looked at primarliy sans serif fonts for the type used in the app. In the end, Helvetica would be used, as it had the most readability amongst the letters. For color (seen below), the circles represent the general theme for each disaster screen, while the bars are for the gray tones used in the launch screen of the app.
Above are some of the iterations of the icon, as well as some of the primary screens for the earthquake guide. Originally, this project began as a guide for solely earthquake, however was later adapted to contain other disasters as well. Looking at the designs themselves (going from left to right), you have the two iterations of the logos, and then the three screens from the app (first to final). At of the development came from user testing, people had issues finding easy ways to go between screens or change answers previously given. Because of this, the addition of a back button was added in the final version. For similar reasons, the more info section was added and unsure button removed. Clarity for questions proved more helpful than providing a third option of unsurity. This also then requires the user to be a bit more certain about their situation, providing a way for them to also take charge.
Above are the final screens, shown styled, with the final logo. One thing to note, is that the second screen on the left is a short information form users submit upon the first use of this app. The information provided is to allow rescue services to help find their location encase there is a disaster, but cell service is available.
