Her Maternal Instincts
A look into the lives of Singaporean mothers

As the society progresses, the role of a mother becomes increasingly challenging.
Due to the high cost of living in Singapore, both parents are required to work to sustain a family’s expenditure.
It is a norm for working mothers to return to work immediately after their maternity leave. As a result, they tend to miss the developmental milestones of their children. This invokes a sense of guilt in them.

On the other hand, out of their desire to personally nurture their children, some working mothers sacrificed their careers for the sake of their children to be a stay-at-home mum. Whilst they are able to witness their children’s development, they are unable to contribute to the family’s financial stability. Furthermore, they become detached from the labour force and the happenings in society. Mothers in Singapore are still expected to fulfil their traditional roles of being the main caregiver to the children and to take charge household chores.

This expectation is supported by an observational study which revealed that women and mothers play the primary role in child rearing. Having seen the struggles faced by mothers in Singapore,
This publication aims to examine their unspoken opinions and heartfelt thoughts of motherhood in today’s society.
