The cultural influences and current social issues faced by Singaporean mothers.
Due to the patriarchal social structure in Singapore, the mother is expected to take charge of
child rearing and household chores. In Singapore today, most women have to juggle between
their work and their family. It has always been a constant challenge to strike a balance
between both. However, in recent years, there is an increasing number of highly educated
women forgoing their career to become stay-at-home mums and this is causing a threat
to the country’s economy. Thus, this publication aims to examine the historical, cultural
influences and the current social issues faced by Singaporean mothers.
