Maternal Struggles Unveiled

Maternal Struggles Unveiled is a 10 minutes documentary which features four Singaporean mothers (two working mothers and two stay-at-home-mothers) who shares about their inner struggles that they had faced throughout their motherhood journey.

In the yesteryears of a more conservative era, a woman’s role was that of a homemaker bound to looking after the children and managing household chores. Only a fraction of them had the privilege to have a career, much less to even pursue their dreams. However, in contemporary times, the role of a woman has reversed to that of being a working mother juggling between being a mother as well as a provider to meet the rising cost of living. As a result, many lose quality time with their children and miss major growing up milestones.

Despite this prevalence, there are also a fraction of women who now enjoy the privilege of being a stay at home mum – a contradicting and ironic disposition considering that this was once the norm. However, many of them face an internal struggle as they sacrifice their financial independence and feel disconnected to society.

This phenomenon presents a societal dilemma – that either role presents advantages and disadvantages, and that each contains its own struggle be it at home or at work. This project aims to narrate this underlying condition by highlighting the problems and tensions that mothers in contemporary Singapore face.
