Arachne Loom is a look-alike and self-contained package. Designed to look like a spider web, the Arachne Loom packages yarn, a knitting hook, a knitting loom and a bulletin board into one package. The purpose of this package is to encourage youth interest in the traditional craft of knitting, by teaching them a simple knitting craft on the colourful looms.

Yarn naturally tangles, becoming hard to work with. By being wrapped around the loom, the yarn does not get tangled. Each loom contains enough yarn to create a hat on that sized loom because the most common item made on the round looms are hats. The knitting ‘spider’ hook, resembles a spider building a web as it is used to hook the yarn on the knitting loom. The spider assigned to each loom are web-weavers and increase from smallest to largest to match the ascending loom size. The looms can also be used as a bulletin board for its second life.

The greatest challenge I had to work through when creating this package was to wrap all the yarn over such a small surface area without making it a huge mess. As one of the major reasons for re-packaging this product was do to yarn tangling, this was especially important. Giving simple instructions on how to use the knitting loom to someone who never used one before within such a small space was also difficult as there were multiple steps. I solved this problem by creating a fold out label so that it would not clutter the loom when packaged, but could be unfolded and read when being used.
