Concept

The idea originates from the desire to operate within the digital space logic, where the separation between user and product is vanishing together with predictions and control of operations. WebtoDesign is a social network dedicated to the emergence of a great interest in design, with an interactive system for arranging, cataloguing and sharing data, in a bottom-up way.

Emerging information (macro-objective)

When the economy of information with its extraordinary capacities to replicate (reproduction at zero cost) is transferred into a complex contest where there is a constant need to follow up on information in our possession in order to keep track of an unpredictable milieu, that type of information, codified for present software designed for the computer’s “intelligence”, is no longer sufficient. Even the mere reproduction of a programme (software) requires a complex learning process which involves elements of evaluation, clarification and action on the part of man. This reduces the space available for the automatic multiplication of information and at the same time, increases the capacity of propagation of the original information for use in an increasingly broad and lasting context.

WebtoDesign comes in an economy of information as an instrument for dividing and spreading information. This occurs on two different levels: on the individual level where data gathered individually are arranged and catalogued, and on the global level, where data gathered individually, organized according to the mental model of the individual, are in contact with one another, generating emerging information.

Sustainable research (macro-objective)

The research process is fundamental; it is the basis of the design process of every designer, whether as a student or a professional. During this process, at this point exclusively digital, a great many data are collected.

Through the use of interactive infographics WebtoDesign creates a “genealogical tree” using the uploaded data, thus guaranteeing the traceability of information; in this way the role of all the information within the research of the users who have benefitted by it can be observed.

The avatar as an active part in the process (macro objective)

The information regarding the user’s research process becomes expressed in graphic form, which constitutes the user’s avatar. Through the avatar and the different types of visualizations, it is possible for those connected to WebtoDesign to explore the content of the research, to add information that can extend and complete one’s own creative itinerary. The avatar represents the container of our research and is also the means which makes it possible to interact within the system. The double loop which is formed, provides an initial feedback, represented by the avatar, or all the creative processes together; a second feedback is in the form of new information.

Use

01. The user uploads into the system his own creative process in pre-existing categories.
02. The creative processes are divided into links which may contain images, text, audio-visual material, and case studies, or in-depth notes created by the user on a specific topic.
03. The case studies may be evaluated positively by the other users by means of special instruments. Using specific research filters the case studies enjoying the most success which provide much in-depth information, are also the most easily visible and therefore the easiest to use by the community. Here we are dealing with the emergence of content in a bottom-up system.
04. The different links and case studies are shown graphically in modules which the system assembles, using specific algorithms to create the avatar of the user. It includes three types of visualizations: one random where the individual components form an abstract figure; another is temporal where the individual items of information are arranged chronologically and finally, the last visualization is of a thematic nature where categories richest in data are shown.
05. The avatar is part of a comprehensive flux of all the avatars (users on line) present in the system.
06. New creative itineraries emerge from the flux of avatars which in turn, if added to the profile modify the avatar itself.
