TYPOGRAPHY
The following projects were created for the typography portion of my Graphics Design program at Herzing College. For each of the projects we had to come up with a creative way to display type.
TRAN NGUYEN MAGAZINE ARTICLE
For the first project we had to create an article about an artist which would appear as a spread in an art magazine. I was fortunate to have connected with Tran Nguyen on Face Book, who is an extremely talented artist. She graciously gave me permission to use her work for this project.
For the layout, I decided to 'extend' the borders of her original work by creating a subtle duplication of the last inch or so of her original paintings. By doing this I created an extension or duplication if you will for the accompanying page where the type would be positioned. This gave a complimentary and cohesive backdrop for the article. In order for the text to show against the image, the overall colour pallet of her original work was made a paler hue.
I also wanted my audience to know how Tran's work actually appears in its original form, so I included smaller images on the right hand side to show her original work. The text I used for my article was taken from a real magazine editorial about Tran Nguyen's art. I copied and used it as my placeholder text for the project.
SPECIAL EDITION NEWSPAPER COVER STORY
The three page newspaper spread was created from scratch, though we were given the title 'InCanada' to use for the name. The text and imagery was taken from actual newspaper articles about the devastating earthquake in Nepal. This was quite a lengthy project to complete, as unlike real newspaper typesetters, who have templates to drop the text into, we had to figure out how to add an abundance of text, make it look realistic as well as interesting.
