A private detective, a hard-bitten smoker and a gambler is murdered in his office. We see the last moments of his life in a series of flashbacks in an attempt to discover the identity of his killer. The characters revolving around this mysterious murder are linked by the detective to cards in a poker game. The inexorable succession of events is marked by the number of cigarettes smoked by the detective.
