In an effort to distance itself from the congestion and confusion in the traffic circle at Eakin’s oval, the proposal has been made to utilise the existing infrastructure of abandoned railway tunnels which cross the Oval below grade as a means to extend the Schuylkill River Trail System into the city more effectively.
 
The negative associations with the darkness and perceived danger of these tunnels is mitigated by the use of light, drainage pools and multiple forms of access in the new trail’s bicycle terminal in an effort to counteract these negative attributes and make the tunnel an intriguing and peaceful experience for the pedestrian.
