An Ode to Typography (1964) by Pablo Neruda and The Crystal Goblet (1930) by Beatrice Ward are two distinctly different writings on typography. The first is in verse form, the second in prose. They both express love, admiration and respect for the ancient craft of typography and printing.

 

The idea of typography as a medium to connect people occurs in both texts. Warde mentions that typography can transfer thought, ideas, and images from one mind to others. Neruda implies that people can connect with their feelings, memories, and thoughts through typography. The idea of connection is conveyed through connecting words from the two texts with a red thread as the viewer folds out the accordion pages.
